Mission:  Millions of people are cut off from the resources that change lives. We close the access gap.

Libraries Without Borders US (LWB US), the American branch of the international nonprofit Bibliothèques Sans Frontières (BSF), is the only organization that combines expert library support services with boots-on-the-ground community implementation—ensuring economically disadvantaged and underrepresented communities gain equitable access to literacy, learning, and cultural connections.

vision

VISION

  • Community agency built through knowledge access

• Breaking cycles of exclusion

• Lasting pathways to opportunity

• Educational equity

• Economic mobility

• Cultural resilience

• Democratic participation

Current Status and Project Goals: LWB US is scaling its programs, including LIFT (early childhood literacy in DC, Baltimore, Richmond), Library School Partnerships (20 partners across 10+ states), and cultural preservation work in Puerto Rico. The organization operates a dual revenue model combining fee-for-service library consulting with grant-funded community programs.

Skills and Assistance Needed:

  • LWB US is seeking targeted technical assistance to strengthen board engagement at the strategic and governance level, with a clear emphasis on the board’s role as a connector, ambassador, and amplifier for the organization. A healthy board operates above day-to-day management, focusing on strategy, fiduciary oversight, resource development, and external relationship-building rather than programmatic or operational direction. This support would help clarify boundaries between governance and management, strengthen shared accountability for fundraising and partnerships, and equip board members to actively leverage their networks, influence, and voice on behalf of LWB US. Technical assistance will support the development of a board culture that is engaged, mission-aligned, equity-centered, and prepared to champion the organization publicly while working in true partnership with the Executive Director to advance long-term sustainability and impact.
  • LWB US is also seeking targeted technical assistance to strengthen its monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) systems, with specific support to its MEL Analyst. This assistance would focus on developing or refining an organization-wide MEL framework that aligns with LWB US’s strategy, values, and equity commitments, while remaining practical and right-sized for a growing organization. Support may include clarifying indicators across programs, strengthening data collection and learning practices, and ensuring MEL systems meaningfully capture outcomes for communities that are often excluded from traditional evaluation approaches. Technical assistance will help ensure LWB US’s MEL function supports adaptive learning, accountability, and evidence-based decision-making without becoming extractive or overly burdensome for staff or partners.
